SKSS hosted Camp Awesome
August 6, 2025

On Wednesday, August 6 th , the club hosted the White Clay Creek State Park’s summer camp, Camp Awesome. The summer camp has been coming to the field for a few years now and we are happy to help. Not to mention that it demonstrates to the Park the value of having our club in residence. The camp staff brought 14 kids to the field. We supplied Guillow’s chuck gliders and RC demonstration flights to keep them entertained and teach them about aerodynamics. We started out with the campers coloring their gilders with crayons so they were personalized. This coloring might have been the most popular part of the day. Club volunteers showed the kids how to insert the balsa wing into the fuselage and how the positioning of the wing affected the gliders’ flight. After that we just stood aside and let them have fun throwing and chasing the gliders all over the field.
Mike Martin brought a foamy P-51 to fly and the kids were properly amazed when they saw it fly.
Somewhere along the line someone produced a soccer ball and the kids had fun kicking it around. This wasn’t on our itinerary but the campers didn’t seem to mind and created their own fun. Gummy sour patch candy capped off the day. Turns out the clubs’ volunteers like gummies as much as any kid.The campers stayed at the field for about 2 hours before being herded off to their next activity.
Many thanks to our volunteers, Mike Martin, Doug VanDeroef and Terry Lisansky.
