Silent Knights Soaring Society

On Saturday, July 12, the SKSS co-hosted a glider contest with the Baltimore Area Soaring Society (BASS).  The contest was an F3L contest, which is a contest for two-meter gliders that are made mostly of wood.  There are gliders that are designed to compete in the F3L category, but the contest was open to any two meter “woody” glider. Those models, such as the Sig Riser I used, were at a disadvantage as they were too heavy but still fun to fly in the contest.
The BASS guys have regular contests, and they are well equipped to run them. They have a program called Glider Score for scoring, a loudspeaker system and a large LED billboard to keep everyone aware of what Round and Heat was happening. They were very well organized.
As per the F3L rules the gliders are launched by a hi-start. If you haven’t used a hi-start there were a lot of helpful guys there to show you how, or even launch the plane for you.
The day started cloudy but cleared up to be a beautiful soaring day with lift everywhere.
